Most metro areas have nicknames that are used on the radio and news broadcasts, etc. Such as the Dallas/Fort Worth area is The Metroplex and Chicago and the near suburbs is called Chicagoland. What is the area around D.C. called that includes Northern Va and the close parts of Maryland. Thanks.

Actually it is called quite a few things. NOVA as one of your answers mentioned only refers to the the area near DC on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. It is most commonly called the DC Metro area. On many urban radio stations, it is referred to as the "DMV" which stands for DC/Maryland/Virginia. After that, each area has it's on unique nicknames such as the "Tech Corridor", "Lower Basin" or farther out from DC, the tri-state area is called the "DelMarVa" for the Deleware, Maryland and Virginia.

I live in DC. It is not called "the Beltway". Northern Virginia, with its whopping 3+ million residents, is often called NoVa (like SoCal). As for the entire area itself, it really does not have a name. "DC Metro Area" is what I hear on the news.

If you live in Maryland, Baltimore and DC are often lumped together, and you would get news and radio from both cities.

Either way, the area is a fascinating place! More PhDs per capita than any other place in the world!

DMV, which stands for District, Maryland, and Virginia is the only nickname for the whole metro area, and then usually on urban radio stations.
