Most of the museums on the National Mall are free. When I go to the Museum of Natural History, I see a lot of kids in the mammal exhibit. Kids also love the Air & Space Museum.

It's not cheap, but if you can get down to the Alexandria waterfront, there are minicruises along the Potomac. There are also daily cruises to Mount Vernon. The fee covers your trip there, your entry fee, and your trip back. There's a bus to Mount Vernon from the Huntington Metro station at the end of the Yellow Line as well. It's a bit south of DC, but it's an interesting bit of history. The cruises don't take place between December and February and are pretty limited in November and March.

Practically all of the museams and monuments are free.

Ones NOT TO MISS:

-US Capital

-National Archives (The Consitution, Decleration of Independence, and Bill of Rights are held here)

-Air and Space Museam

-Natural History Museam

-all of the monuments

-American History museam (if it's open)

-Library of Congress

There are several other museams in the area, but the ones I put on the list are the best. The Art museams, the Holocoust museam, and others are very nice and worth a look if you have the time,

I wouldn't reccomend going into the White House. You have to regestier in advance, and they only show you a few rooms. But you can go outside of it and take pictures. There is also a visitors center near it which is like a little museam.

have fun, hope this helps!!

The 'Mall' is the long green park between the Capitol and the Lincoln Monument. At either side of the Mall, closer to the Capitol, there are several museums, which the kids can enjoy. All the museums are free! Best for kids: the National Space and Air Museum and the Natural History Museum. They are almost in front of eachother.

Washington DC also has a great zoo, with many different species (tigers, pandas, elephants, jiraffes, snakes, etc) , which is also free! It is not near the 'center' where the 'Mall' is, but there is public transport.

Another pretty area is Georgetown, with its 'main street' which is lively, but that might be more interesting to adults than kids.

Enjoy!
