None. It is a district...its full name is Washington District of Columbia. It is not a state either. It is bordered by Maryland and Virginia. A common misconception is that half of it is in Maryland, and half is in Virginia. That is not true. If you go south out of D.C., then you cross the border of D.C. and enter Virgina, and visi versa.
