Get a room at the Hilton in Alexandria, VA. It's located right next to the Metro. All you have to do is cross the street, hop on the Metro and take a 5 - 10 min. trip to D.C.

If you don't feel like taking the Metro in to D.C. that day, there is plenty to do in Alexandria too. Lot's of neat shops and fabulous restaurants.

This is one of the coolest hotels you'll ever see: Hotel Helix. It's not far from the monuments (maybe a 10-15 minute walk?), unique, has a fun bar, and also not far from metro stops. It's maybe $100-140, depending on when you go.

I would stay in Arlington, Va. Rooms are cheaper there and can enjoy one of the best subways in the world. Don't forget to go to Mount Vernon and Old Alexandria.
