DC stands for District of Columbia. There is also the state of Washington and many smaller towns called Washington. DC was purposely built to be the US Capital. The only other city in the world that was purposely built to be the capital is Canberra, Australia. Have a good day!

There are many cities called Washington in the US. The "D.C." part tells you which city is being referred to -- the one in the District of Columbia.
