I am travelling to Washington DC next week, and i want to carefully plan my trip because I only have a whole day to spend.

Coming from DCA/Reagan National aiport, and taking the metro, which station should I get off If I'm planning to go to the capitol? or anywhere near it? or at least the sation that would put me in the middle of the city?

Capitol South is one block from the US Capitol. It serves the Blue and the Orange lines.

Here's a map:

At National airport, follow the signs to the Metro station. Buy a Metro card (there will be a sign showing you the price from the airport to Capitol South depending upon the time of day that you are traveling). Go to the platform and get on a Blue line train heading into DC. Get off at the Capitol South station. When you come up the escalator to street level, you'll see in front of you the rear of the Library of Congress' Madison Building and one of the House Office Buildings. Walk up the street between the two (it goes uphill) and you'll see the US Capitol in front of you.

Another option is to get on a Yellow line train heading into DC. Get off at L'Enfant Plaza station and use the exit to the National Mall. You'll see the Smithsonian Museums in front of you, and looking to the right you'll see--about three blocks away--Capitol Hill.

the Capitol, or the Capitol BUILDING?

the former is pretty darn big and several stops service it, it just depends on what your actual plans are.
