Nova is short for "Northern Virginia." Yes, it's all around the south and west sides of DC. It is part of the DC Metropolitan area, and is comprised of a few counties and many towns.

NoVa is short for Northern Virginia. It's the cities and counties in Virginia that are closest to Washington: Arlington Co., Alexandria, Fairfax Co., Fairfax City, Falls Church. Other people might include Loudoun Co., Fauquier County, Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park.

It's a big part of Virginia thought of as part of the DC metropolitan area. Frankly, it's one of my favorite parts of DC. The best places to visit there are Old Town Alexandria and Clarendon.

There are also a lot of historical areas if you are visiting and are interested, especially further out. Some of the greatest battles of both the Revolutionary and Civil wars are found in that area.
