I moved to DC 2 weeks ago and figured somebody might be able to help me by telling me of some things to see that are interesting but not the monuments that are obvious.

Get on a bicycle and take the Capital Crescent Trail up to Bethesda and back through Rock Creek Park to complete the 20-mile loop, aka The Zoo Review. Start under Key Bridge in Georgetown and go a few miles up the C&O Canal Tow Path before taking the path that veers off to the right just after the boat house and goes up to the reservoir. Once in Bethesda, stop a Starbucks for a Latte, and if its a Saturday go to the Farmers Market across the street. Get back on your bike and continue on the path down through Rock Creek Park, past the zoo, and back into Georgetown.
When your finished, reward yourself with drinks at Sequoia.

Take the Trolley Tours. For around $25 you can see most of the sites in one day. Union Station is a good place to have lunch for the typical tourist. If you want local flare, then try the Irish Times and the Dubliner 2 blocks from Union Station. Also, China Town by the MCI Center. A good pub in China Town is Fado's, it's an Irish pub that has good food and beer.

Chinatown?! Are you kidding me? It's more like American-chain empire-town now, the high real estate forced out all of the Chinese restaurants. It's great if you want to eat at a tapas bar then go to Coyote Ugly afterwards.
Go to the MD side of Great Falls Park, the Billy Goat Trail offers a challenging hike as well as great scenery over the Potomac.
The National Gallery of Art is my favorite "museum", they have a Cezanne exhibit currently until summer.

well, I don't know if the smithsonian counts as a monument, even though it is pretty monumental, but I would consider picking one of the museums and just losing yourself inside for a while. they're pretty amazing, and if I lived in DC, I think they'd have to drag me out every night.

Have dinner in Chinatown. Chinatown is awesome in Washington. I just went over Christmas break.

Take a cab down to M street around midnight. Get out, walk around and try not to die.

Take a tour of the US Treasury. I think that would be fascinating.
